Flying with a baby

As Easter approaches I believe that most of us are planning some kind of family getaway to relax and maybe tank a bit of sun. In my opinion, having a baby does not have to stop you from doing the things you love (which in our case is travel), but you only have to adapt it to the new circumstances.

As I have already mentioned in other blog posts, my family lives in Spain and we fly regularly to visit them. The first flight we took with Alexander, he was only one and half months old, and you can imagine how nervous I was. But one thing I have to say, is that flying with a newborn is actually pretty easy. He slept the whole time!.

When booking the seats, we always try to have one on the window. It gives you a bit more privacy to nurse and if you have a toddler they enjoy looking out the window into the sky. Also, families with babies usually get on board before the rest of the passengers and you will have no problem in finding place for your hand luggage in the overhead compartments.

To move around the airport, we chose to take Alexander in a baby carrier. This allows you to have both hands free and the closeness to mum or dad calms him a lot. This is a very practical way to travel with a newborn until they are 6 months old. At this point, they are a bit too heavy to spend so much time in the carrier and they don't sleep as much.

For us now it was the time to purchase a travel-friendly buggy. Most buggies are suitable from 6 months and up. After some internet research, we chose the Nuna Pepp Luxx 2015 in black. We liked the fact that it can be used up to 18 Kg, when most of the buggies have a 15 Kg limit.

The  removable basket is big enough to carry some of your travel essentials with you and the bigger wheels makes it very easy to manouvre in different pavements. It also has a three position full recline and a two position adjustable calf support.

The canopy has a flip out eyeshade for sun protection with a mesh side panel that makes it breathable.
It is also very easy to fold and unfold and stands vertical when folded. The handle has five positions for taller parents. We find it very compact and easy to use as well as stable.

My last tips to you that are sort of a given is to nurse him or give him a pacifier for take off and landing. This will help relieve the ear pressure. And lastly, have always some spare clothes in your diaper bag just in case!

I hope you liked this blog post, and pleas let me know if you have some other tips for flying with babies that work for you.

Enjoy your vacations!
